New Approach to King Richard III

Lately there have been quite some delays in delivering the news here on KRA. That is due to me being totally overworked and once again fighting with computer hard- and software. As the problems are not house made, but rather involve service providers and those companies so far have not been able to eliminate the causes for the problems, the difficulties might continue for a while longer, till my entire building and town region get new wires, as those seem to be the most likely culprit, as all else has failed to solve the problem so far.

To enable me to keep you updated, while not bother you with numerous messages whenever I have time to accumulate the news, I changed the way of collecting the news stream.
Each news item gets its own post – which, depending on your settings, could result in an individual alert for each newspaper article. As I cannot be sure that is what you are interest in to get here from the KRA website, those news posts now run into a separate sub-blog on the website.
To avoid sending out an alert for every single news article and annoy you with a flood of mails and posts you might or might not be interested in, the news does not go out into the general RSS-feed and newsletter alerts.

If you want to get all the news alerts from KRA in the future, you will need to

  • follow us on Twitter, where all alerts run into our tweets
  • or watch our Facebook page, where also all messages are collected indiscriminately.
  • watch the new “NewsStream” pages (NewsStream / 2014-News – annual news selections)
  • or subscribe to the second NewsAlert for the NewsStream in addition to our general Blog-Alerts (Both newsletter subscription forms are in the sidebar. The general blog alert is in the top and the NewsStream subscription form is below the NewsStream-preview.)

News gets announced as soon as I find it and have time to put it up.
The NewsStream pages are strictly sorted by day, so news I find at a later date might not always be the last on top, but will show up on the pages at the correct date the news was originally published.

This is in no way a guarantee that the NewsStream will either cover all news or necessarily your or our opinion. I am only human and only take articles which do not copy content already mentioned elsewhere, but really have news and something ‘new’ in them.
As I am over my head in work, I hope this is a way to either keep you updated and still keep the workload doable for me.

Greetings and best wishes,
CDoart

Some older news, which I still want to mention, as they are central in the latest discussions about King Richard III and his adequate handling. The UStream video-stream of the King Richard III conference held by the St. Louis University temporarily was not available or only transferred with major sound problems at the time. I now tested it once again and currently it works fine, so I want to bring it to your attention again.

Research & King Richard’s Life

First of all, before I start with news about King Richard III and actor Richard Armitage again in the new year 2014,
I hope you reached the year 2014 in good health and will have a wonderful and successful year!!!

My own beginning of the year 2014 was a bit sub-optimal in various aspects and so the year ahead has a very wide bandwidth of opportunity to get better ;o)
Hopefully your start into 2014 was better than mine and the year advances to a fantastic outcome, maybe even the hotly anticipated announcement of the King Richard Armitage – film.

♛ King Richard Armitage ♛

  • The Sag Harbor Express: The Hobbit’s Hunks, Part II: Lee Pace and Richard Armitage, by Danny Peary (02.01.2014) – Interview where Richard Armitage once again mentions King Richard III as his inspiration for Thorin Oakenshield in “The Hobbit”:
[SPOILER ALERT, as ending of “The Hobbit” trilogy/book is mentioned in the following quote!]

Danny Peary: Would you play your character any differently if you didn’t know that at the end of Tolkien’s book he dies?

Richard Armitage: No, probably not. His death scene was left until quite late in the shoot. We didn’t shoot it until pick-ups, which I think was a good thing because I’d almost forgotten about that moment coming. I think that part of the creation of this character is offering the audience and other characters in the movie a potential future. He had to be someone who was going to be king, he was going to sit on that throne and return the dwarves to their former glory. And in a way, his death has to come by surprise to him. Having said that, I think one of the things – talking about Shakespeare again – that I admire about Richard the III is that he rides across the battlefield to fight, single-handedly, for his kingdom, for his crown. In the Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin is going to do something like that. It’s fatalistic. It’s fatalistic. It’s almost an act of suicide. Playing it, it’s good I forgot I needed to die!

But now to the late news and, you will almost expect it already, a new petition about King Richard III:

♛ King Richard III ♛

New Petition about King Richard III’s remains and their interim resting place:
Justice Review panel on the subject of Richard III, London,England.: Remove the remains of King Richard III to a neutral site

The current treatment of King Richard III’s bones reveals much about our modern attitude and lax treatment of death and the dead.
While such a treatment would have been seen as denigrating and demeaning to a person of King Richard III’s time, when the body was seen as a sacred unity given by God. Even medical research into the inner parts and structure of the body was met with great aversion and even banned by the church as it was destroying the God given ‘body’. Though it could be argued that King Richard III with his connections to scholars of the university of Padua might have had a more pro-active approach. Only a time-traveler might find out the truth and I hope he will then let us know …
Please take part in the petition(s) as you see fit and your belief dictates you.

Richard Armitage in a late interview with Helen of Empire magazine (podcast of about 13.12.2013 – Richard III part begins at about 1:36:00)
speaking about his connection and interest in King Richard III:

Transcript of the part about King Richard III:

Helen (interviewer):
Is it true that you were named after Richard III?

RA: That is true. Yes.
My father was really into the history of the Plantagenets and I was born on 22nd of August which is the Battle of Bosworth Field when Richard died on the battlefield.
I was always a bit mad at my dad, because – for naming me after what was perceived to be a hunchbacked child-murderer. But then in later years I just developed a similar interest in the story, because we used to visit there every year on my birthday. Thanks, dad.
That was my birthday treat to go and look at an empty field, but – in recent months his remains had been found so it is all kind of coming to the surface again.

Helen: Quite literally.

RA: Literally.

Helen: When you said you began to share his interest I was worried you meant the child murdering and hunchback.

RA: No, no. No, definitely not that. Although, but the fascination with the sort of unsolved crime, I did become kind of interested in not necessarily resurrecting his heroicism, but just looking at the story again.
Because he was our last monarch that died on a battlefield and it’s interesting how I am sort of playing a character that is not dissimilar to him in Thorin. So I was using a bit of that – you know – character in Thorin. Yea.

King Richard III News – Long Overdue Updates

I am most certainly behind with reporting about the King Richard news.
Real life intervenes quite heavily right now. Sorry. I will try my best to keep up with the news.

But now here comes the news collected in the meantime since I fell off the plateau of the earth:
(Due to its length, the articles are arranged in a changed order – from new to old news.)

Though, I must say, as one with a sibling having a similar condition as King Richard III had, just lower on the back, but almost as severe, I vehemently insist (!) on calling it a ‘condition’ and not a ‘disability’.
The reviewer Mr. Penn should do some more medical research in this aspect, then he perhaps would recognize that this ‘condition’ not necessarily disables the afflicted from doing anything.
In the case of King Richard III, the way and position his skeleton was found in could also have added to the severeness of the ‘condition’. So to really judge how much ‘disabled’ he was because of this ‘condition’ would necessitate a time-travel jump to see him alive.
Seeing my sibling and comparing their ‘conditions’, I would even go so far as to think that the ‘condition’ only became known because of the exposure of his naked body after his death and posed a great opportunity to ‘bedevil’ the dead predecessor on the throne. This also would answer, why no contemporary source exists which mentions King Richard III’s ‘condition’ before his death.
Though this is no total proof, as Henry Tudor and his minions were quite meticulous with destroying all evidence of his predecessor. So we for once might thank Henry Tudor for this cleaned up picture of King Richard III or this eternal riddle.
Perhaps Thomas Penn, who also is the author of the book “The Winter King: Henry VII and the Dawn of Tudor England” about the reign of King Henry VII and the foundation of the Tudor dynasty, reveals more about the Tudor king’s way of transforming the perception and creating the story for history there. Though the topic of his book alone show, where his favours in the Battle of Bosworth lie.

  • Express: Book Review: The search for Richard III by Philippa Langley and Michael Jones, by Nigel Jones (06.10.2013) – The author of this review perhaps best describes his own review:

    curiously lop-sided

The review is – as far as I can tell – solely based on the reading of the index and appendix of the book, which does not highly recommend its accuracy or significance to me, especially as it is in complete disagreement with the previous review by IoniaMartin. As the reviewer also has written a book about the Tower and the Princes in the Tower, it seems his review is more in his own defence, rather than an objective critique of the new publication.
I will hold back my final judgement till I get my version of “The King’s Grave. The Search for Richard III”, but so far this review only reached to confirm my opinion that historians don’t like to re-research comfortably settled and accepted ‘truths’, even when new aspects arise.

Sensational News About King Richard Film

Is the film about King Richard III with Richard Armitage in the role of the king finally on its way?
Hear Philippa Langley, the screenwriter working on a project about King Richard III, talking about her progress and about Richard Armitage as her ideal King Richard III:

♛ King Richard III ♛

Happy Birthday, King Richard !!!

Happy 561st birthday, King Richard III !

King Richard III’s first birthday after being found !

Let’s celebrate a king, who, after over 500 years can activate a fierce followership and easily start a – no, what am I talking about – numerous burning controversies.
Who else from history can say that about himself after all that time.

  • Matt Lewis (AuthorBlog): Happy Birthday King Richard III! (02.10.2013) – And with King Richard III we can well say in all controversy and while celebrating the freedom of controversy:

Stand strong and true for that which you believe in. Do not be silenced.

  •

  • Karen Lewis on Facebook shared a wonderful Birthday announcement for King Richard III. (As I did not ask for permission to re-post in time, I only include the link to the picture and do not embed it here, but the wonderful picture should be visible even if you do not have a Facebook account.)
  •

Now, how best to celebrate a king?

  • Of course with song and music, one especially created and composed for King Richard III, like the song “Douce Dame” by The Orpheus Project (see our interview with composer team MaryAnn & Michael Tedstone):
  •

Or would you like to celebrate with an audio play?

  • Try the BBC production of “The Daughter of Time” by Josephine Tey, where a modern day inspector researches the crimes of King Richard III and in the end finds him …
Upcoming broadcasts begin on Monday, 7 Oct 2013 on BBC Radio 4. (See BBC page for the play and schedule here.)
  •

  • Leicester Mercury: British Bake-Off contestant creates Richard III birthday cake, by Peter Warzynski (02.10.2013) – With this cake, I almost wish King Richard III could come into our time. Considering he never ever ate a piece of chocolate or ever tasted chocolate cake? How I would like to send him one piece of that lovely cake to try. (I certainly must try the recipe myself.)
  •
King Richard III must feel right at home in modern times and we have a strange way of making him feel welcome.
But he certainly must see the parallels to his time. Skirmishes everywhere and all ready to do battle.
What a perfect continuation of the Wars of the Roses in its modern form.
I even feel compelled to say that he might be glad, that his duty as king is over and he now can continue as a spectator.

But the whole movements are perfect to finally give King Richard III the attention he deserves and even if you don’t agree with the one or other argument, at least they are a perfect marketing way to draw interest to his wishes, which nobody considered (during his life and especially) at and after his death 500 years ago.

Due to strange internet connectivity problems, this post unfortunately is very late. Still I hope, King Richard III has/had great 561st birthday celebrations.

As the fandom of actor Richard Armitage often gets generally refered to as ‘Armitage Army’, it will not astonish that we use the ‘modern form of battle’ to show our hopes and whishes.
Our petition for a film to be made about King Richard III, which involves actor Richard Armitage in whatever function or action he is willing to take, is open worldwide, as also the audience of a potential film is expected to be world spanning, as do our signatures show.

As we run our petition for a film about King Richard III under the influence of actor Richard Armitage for a while now, we observe all later petitions about King Richard III with especial scrutiny, as already the topic connection ‘petition for King Richard’ brings us in close proximity with them, even when we remain completely neutral on any of their outcome.

While our petition addresses all who are interested in King Richard III and actor Richard Armitage, the new petitions for King Richard III are more localised events and most only open for U.K. citizens. Though, are they really ‘for’ King Richard III or just one place or other, interpreting the king and his potential wishes from a modern standpoint and projecting modern ideas, laws and democratic ideals on a Medieval king and – not to fortget, after all – a human being?
This is the question I, though excessively researching the running petitions, never could answer to my complete satisfaction and so I just can’t give any kind of advice how to vote or take part in the ‘Battle of the Cities’ and remain with my neutral standpoint – potentially taking the position of ‘advocatus diaboli‘ to present all positions equally – and link to all petitions available, whenever they come up in the news:
